Cape Epic: 'Extreme' no longer covers the situation

Diary from André Hauschke and Gisela Gartmair: 30.03.2011

I would like to say a few words today over the race and the trail.

We eventually reached the finish-line after a difficult section whereby we were hindered by 2 punctures and a ripped side-wall. Even so, we came across the finish line in a respectable 29th place although the course had completely drained us both.

Back at camp, all conversation seemed to be giving the same message. All riders are unanimous that today was the hardest section so far by this years Cape Epic. Cross full-suspension bikes gained a huge benefit today and this showed clearly in the race results. The number one team consisting of 'Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander' were beaten for the first time so far.
Slowly but surely the field is starting to break up and all riders are starting to show signs of the strain that this event has on the human body.

Unfortunately Gisi was forced to retire from the race due to increasingly poor condition and thus I started individually and had to fight the course alone. I understand her decision very well and good health is the number one priority - get well soon Gisi!
