IFMA 1988

In 1988 the Rohloff GmbH took part for the first time at the IFMA with its recently developed bicycle chain Rohloff S-L-T 99. With its design "Super Narrow" new standards were set. The IFMA, in this period of time, was the world's largest bike exhibition (Motor cycle and bicycle) which still takes place every two years in Cologne /Germany. Shimano was introducing that time its first 8-speed derailleur gear shifting system.

The film shows the so-called "Japanese Scare". A long Rohloff S-L-T 99 chain runs several times crossed with its to date unbeaten sideways flexibility over various sprockets. Simultaniously, there are three gear shifting systems (Campagnolo, Shimano, Hügi) one after the other employed with only one manual gear change. In front of the boot the race solar vehicle Dyname of the University Kassel is placed. Powered by a Rohloff S-L-T 99 chain this vehicle achieved at the "Tour de Sol" 1987 in Swiss the World championship.

Two highly interested visitors, members of the far eastern competitors, take a closer look at the new chain in the functioning model. First the gears are shifted, then the crank is wheeled for a quarter of a turn. After that, the gear shift has to be completed. The expression in their faces are confirming highly satisfaction about the gear shifting comfort.
