Removal of the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit

Note

The following instructions pre-suppose the use of fully functioning Rohloff E-14 and Bosch eBike system components.

Removal of the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit

Hold the wheel/hub on the workbench with the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit facing upward.

Axleplate position
Note the position of the axleplate with a marker pen or scribe prior to removing it.

Tip: Take a photograph of the position for future reference

Axleplate removal
Uncrew the 5 TX20 axleplate screws (Torx TX20 T-Wrench) to remove the axleplate.

Remove shift cog
Use a set of tweezers to lift the shift cog up and off of the shifting shaft.

Remove the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit
Lift the entire Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit up and off of the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14.

Attention:
Ensure the open end of the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 faces upward at all times to avoid the risks of: oil loss / freewheel spring loss

Remove the two old, green paper gaskets from SPEEDHUB 500/14 or E-14 Shifter Unit (may have stuck to either component due to oil).  Do not reuse these gaskets!

Mounting the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit

If the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 was not shifted into gear number 14 prior to removal of the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit, you will need to follow the process outlined directly below.

Shift the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 per hand, into gear number 14 by rotating the shifting shaft manually using an 8mm wrench. Gear 14 will require the shifting shaft to be rotated in a counter-clockwise direction as shown in the illustration to the left.

Now complete the following steps:

- Connect the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit to the Bosch eBike System.
- Install the Bosch eBike System battery back into the bicycle.
- Switch Bosch eBike System “on“.
- Use the '+' button to shift the E-14 Shifter Unit into gear number 14 (gear indicator shown in Bosch display)
- Switch Bosch eBike System “off“.
- Remove the battery back from the Bosch eBike System.
- Disconnect the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit from the Bosch eBike System.

Safety Information - eBike

Be careful when working on a Bosch eBike System equipped bicycle with system battery installed and/or switched “on”.

Warning

Disconnection/connection of CAN-Bus cables during operation may lead to erratic behavior of individual components – possibly even to the irreparable destruction thereof.

Paper gaskets
Fit new paper gaskets to the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit as illustrated in the photo to the left.

Ensure the holes of the gasket are orientated directly over the screwholes of the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit.

Freewheel Springs
Check that both freewheel springs are present and correctly installed.

Attaching the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit back onto Rohloff the SPEEDHUB 500/14

Attention:
Refer to Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 Owners Manual – Appendix “Grub Screw of the External Gear Mech”

Orientate the blind hole of the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit so that this is located directly over the grub-screw (as illustrated in photos above).

Orientate the two guide pins of the Rohloff E14 Shifter Unit so that these are located directly over the two freewheel springs (as illustrated in photos to the left).

Installation of Shift Cog
Ensure the teeth of the shift cog are facing upward, away from the gear-unit. Reinstall the shift cog onto the shifting shaft.

Attention: Refer to Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 Owners Manual – “Changing the Gear Mech”

Attention:
The shift cog will only slip easily onto the hexagonal shifting shaft, in one of the six possible orientations.

Axleplate installation
Reaplace the axleplate back over the Rohloff E-14 Shifter Unit, in the correct orientation as prior to removal. Secure in place using the 5x TX20 axleplate screws.  (Torx TX20 T-Wrench, 3Nm / 25”lbs).
