SPEEDHUB XXL A12 (197mm)
Rohloff offers a version of our now legendary SPEEDHUB 500/14 gear hub especially suited to the extreme conditions in which Fatbikes are used.
The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 XXL is constructed for frames using a 197mm spacing and dropouts which accept 12mm thru axles.
A12 SPEEDHUB models can only be supplied upon receipt of 3 documents completed during a special dropout measurement procedure. Our distributors or service partners will be able to supply the special A12 measurement kit for this purpose upon request.
Only upon receipt of the completed documents will be able to confidently state that we can supply a SPEEDHUB compatible with the frame. The test results will then also enable us to ship the A12 SPEEDHUB unit with the correct adapters and reduction sleeves.
Fatbikes are primarily designed to enable one to keep pedalling through even the harshest conditions - conditions in which a cyclist on a traditional bicycle would be forced to dismount and push. The fat tires offer a much larger footprint thus keeping the bicycle afloat on soft terrain. The additional traction this provides ensures a Fatbike rider will enjoy many miles of riding long after the standard bicycle has reached its limits. Fatbikes are especially suitable for transversing snow, bogs/marshland and sand.
The SPEEDHUB 500/14 XXL is the ideal transmission for Fatbikes. The conditions in which such bicycles are ridden require a transmission that can be kept as clean as possible. Only a clean, un-clogged transmission can ensure problem-free functionality and nothing increases the enjoyment you can have out on the trails more than having access to the right gear at all times! Of course the SPEEDHUB 500/14 XXL has the additional advantage of being compatible with the ‘Gates Carbon Drive’ belt drive system, reducing the level of transmission maintenance even further.

These dimensions enable the use of up to 5" tires (mounted on 80mm and 100mm wide rims) in frames with a 197mm spacing - without the risk of chain/tire interference! We recommend the use of rims with a minimum 12.5mm nipple offset in order to avoid the spoke 'kinking' when entering the nipple. Such kinks will weaken the spoke and can cause premature spoke failure.
The SPEEDHUB XXL A12 version is available exclusively in an anodized black finish with 32 spoke holes, OEM2 axleplate and a disc brake compatible hub-cap (Art. #8097zXXL). All XXL versions therefore come equipped with the external gear mech.
The use of the A12 OEM2-10 axleplate requires the additional use of an adapter to anchor the torque to the frame and also ensure the brake caliper sits correctly over the brake rotor. The frame will dictate which version is required. (IS2000 = Monkeybone-10 / PM = Fatbone).
Should your frame require the use of the Rohloff Fatbone, then a larger 4-bolt brake rotor will also be required. This is because the Fatbone also acts as an adapter pushing the caliper further away from the rotor - this distance must be compensated.
The different available combinations are:
- Frame with IS2000 caliper mount = Monkebone -10/160mm (Art.#8553-10) or Monkeybone-10/180mm (Art.#8554-10)
- Frame with 160mm PM caliper mount = Fatbone 180 (Art.#8556) + 180mm 4-bolt Brake rotor
- Frame with 180mm PM caliper mount = Fatbone 203 (Art.#8557) + 203mm 4-bolt Brake rotor
Due to the extended axle length on both sides of the SPEEDHUB, the chainline will be 10mm further inbound than expected. A Chain tensioner-10 (Art. #8250-10) may therefore also be required to ensure the jockey-wheels can still be positioned correctly under the SPEEDHUB sprocket.
Because the SPEEDHUB XXL A12 unit is based upon the SPEEDHUB XL A12, many mounting instructions remain identical (e.g. cable routing, shifter and brake rotor mounting) and thus instructions for these processes can be easily found in the standard SPEEDHUB 500/14 owners manual.

We regret that it is not possible to convert existing SPEEDHUB 500/14s (135, 142, 148, 170, 190mm) to the XXL (199mm) format!
