Cape Epic: ...and we're off!

Diary from Michael Opper and Ralf Kropp: 27.03.2011

The first days racing goes surprisingly well for us!!

Our race started at 10:10:05 on the dot with the startnumbers 604-1 (Michael) and 604-2 (Ralf) hurtling through the forest of Tokai on the 27km long Prolog course which proved to be excellent, regardless of theunusually high level of traffic (there were a total of 1.200 riders competing!). The course was great fun and we came across the finish line with a time of just 1:23:13,4 and a feeling that this was an exceptional pace.

Because the event was organized so the faster riders actually started last, we were then forced to sit around and wait to hear what position we had placed. After all riders were accounted for, it turns out that we were indeed fast. We had managed 16th place from approximately 200 teams in the Masters category. A very good start to the event.

Thanks to the first class organization, the transfer of both riders and equipment from the Chrysalis Acadedemy (Start and finish of the Prolog) to the Saronsberg Wine Estate in Tulbagh (Start and finish of the first stage) went witzhout a single hiccup. Tents and provisoions were already set-up and waiting.

We finished the day with an excellent massage from Stefan Herb and then were able to enjoy a delicious meal before a beautiful panoramic sunset over the mountainse. The perfect conditions for winding down and preparing mentally for the following days stage.
