On the way to the 21st century !

Rohloff Biker

The family-run ROHLOFF company is an enterprise which has repeatedly shown its innovative power by developing new products in the field of motive power engineering for bicycles. Top athletes in particular, have for years appreciated the company's products. Not only for their incredible high performance and efficiency but also for their reliability and durability.

1986

green monster

Bernhard and Barbara Rohloff founded the company with a vision of producing their own high performance bicycle chain, the ROHLOFF S-L-T 99. They developed their own production tools, testing devices and machines. Their assembly machine the "Green Monster" has since been the heart of the high quality production.

1990

Rohloff Raven

While having achieved popularity in and around Germany, Rohloff chains receive acclaim at international level when they are used by both the winners of the Tour de France and the World Championship road races. Ever since, ROHLOFF's S-L-T 99 chains have won respect in top-class events all over the world. The 1996 TEAM FESTINA and mountain bike racers Regina Marunde and Ralph Berner exclusively use ROHLOFF chains both on the road and on dirt. Be it on Road races, Cross Country, Down Hill, Trials, Triathlon, expeditions through Greenland's ice, through desert sands or even extreme tours such as "Around the world in 80 days" - world class sportsmen have trusted the reliability of ROHLOFF quality products. ROHLOFF would like to thank all other unnamed athletes without whose help the relentless improvement of ROHLOFF products would have been impossible.

Revolver 2

Rohloff Revolver 2

ROHLOFF's experience with professional racing and comprehensive research and development shows that the common, simply-joined connection pin is particularly prone to defects with many chains. To minimize this they developed the universal chain riveting tool, the ROHLOFF REVOLVER. Currently, the ROHLOFF REVOLVER is the only tool which actually rivets the connecting pin with 1,5 tons spindle force, thereby securing that connection. Since 1994 people who attach importance to a swift and secure chain assembly have used the newly developed ROHLOFF REVOLVER 2.

1991

Rohloff Caliber 2

ROHLOFF develops an easy-to-handle chain wear indicator giving the user a clear signal when the chain's wear limit has been reached. Two years later the caliber is adapted to the improved wear rate of major brand bicycle chains. Now available as the ROHLOFF-CALIBER 2.

1992

Rohloff HG-IG-Check

It became obvious that, with the advent of the mountain biking, rear sprocketswere being subjected to extremely high chain forces (dirt, debris, shifting under load, etc.) and needed replacement more frequently. ROHLOFF develops the HG-CHECK as the best tool for gauging sprocket wear and later, in 1995, introduced the ROHLOFF HG-IG CHECK for use with both HG and IG cassettes.

1993

Rohloff Lubmatic

In order to increase the life span of your drivetrain it is of paramount importance that lubricant is applied to the chain whenever necessary. The ROHLOFF LUBMATIC (colours: silver and dark blue) takes care of this quickly, easily and with the exact amount of lube necessary. The ROHLOFF LUBMATIC may be affixed to any bike with a derailleur system making lubrication a snap while riding. The light pulleys with sealed cartridge bearings, exclusively designed for this purpose, may also be bought separately.

1994

Oil of Rohloff

To continue with the ROHLOFF philosophy that only products of the highest quality should be introduced to the market, ROHLOFF develops a new lubricant. This lubricant can withstand the highest stress (caused by pressure, dirt and moisture) and is still bio-degradable. Used sparingly on the chain, even better with the help of a ROHLOFF LUBMATIC, OIL OF ROHLOFF always offers the best in chain care. Your dealer will refill the 50 ml bottle when necessary 5 Lite r containers with decanting pumps and 1 liter cans are also available.

1995

Raben Post

The ROHLOFF symbol is a flying raven. In 1995 the logo took on a whole new meaning when a raven that had fallen from its nest was adopted and named, appropriately enough, Rohloff. The new family member became known in the area as 'the flying workmate' and also was a bit of a performer, playing tricks for anyone and everyone. Ever since the nursing of ravens has been an integral part of the company's work. 1996 A New Decade Begins

At a moment when no major improvements of derailleur systems could realistically be expected, Rohloff started devising a transmission system which would combine all the advantages of a derailleur system (low weight, high efficiency and wide range of gears) while avoiding its weaknesses (enormous maintenance, susceptibility to dirt, high wear and low shifting speed). The SPEEDHUB 500/14 was the result of many years of research and development and was presented at the IFMA 96 show in honour of the company's 10th anniversary. The goal for 1997 was to have the product ready for series production. Therefore the SPEEDHUB had to undergo extensive race-testing so as to prove that it could withstand long lasting loads even under the toughest conditions.

1998

The SPEEDHUB 500/14 has been developed for both pros and performance oriented hobby cyclists who can appreciate it because of its reliability, perfect  single gear ratios, wide range of gears, low maintenance and easy operation; its weight and efficiency are ideal even for pro racing. The sealed gearbox ensures reliability and durability even under the toughest conditions. The even increments of 13.6% from gear to gear make it possible to always ride at the performance peak. The overall range of 526% makes sure that you have the right gear in every situation. Pure fun is guaranteed.

The SPEEDHUB 500/14 is operated by a twist shifter which shifts simply by pulling separate cables up or down. The indexing of the shifting lies not in the shifter as with common designs, but inside the hub. There is no wear on the indexing system nor need to adjust it.

Speedhub 500/14 CC

Speedhub 500/14 CC

State of the Art Technology

Speedhub 500/14

The core of any model of the SPEEDHUB 500/14 is the 14 speed gear unit. If the hub was to be disassembled, the whole gear unit would be removed in one piece as a single unit on the axle. This way the removal or replacement of the gear unit can be easily achieved without the need for special tools.
The modular package contains:

  • Speedhub 500/14
  • 16 tooth sprocket
  • twist shifter
  • torque support axle plate
  • chain tensioner (only with certain models)
  • cables and accessories

1999

Speedhubs

After an intensified testing period the series production of the SPEEDHUB 500/14 has been started in 1999. Ever since, thousands of hubs have left the production line, quantity increasing. End of 2002 about 20.000 SPEEDHUBS 500/14 are operating flawlessly world-wide. The 1st Rohloff SPEEDHUB-Festival takes place in Kassel’s famous park Fulda-Aue.

2003

The 2nd Rohloff Speedhub Festival takes place with a great many visitors.
In November 2003 the Rohloff GmbH is changed to Rohloff AG.

2004

Rohloff AG building

Due to the insufficient capacity and space of our factory and the ever increasing demand for the SPEEDHUB 500/14 we needed to move to a newer and larger production facility.
Finally, in summer 2004 it happened, a suitable new home is found and the move followed.

The leaving of the old premises in the Moenchebergstrasse and the move to Fuldatal was not made not without shedding the odd teardrop. After all, the company Rohloff had resided for 18 years under the old address in the much praised backyard-idyll.
In September the big opening party and SPEEDHUB-Festival took place with a great number of visitors in Fuldatal.

Year change 2004/2005

At the end of 2004 more than 40,000 SPEEDHUB 500/14s are in use worldwide.
